\\British Wildlife// Teamwork Research

27 Feb

Some months ago, I published the first wixsite I created so my 3rd grade students could investigate and learn about the British culture working on their own. This time, I would like to share the second one I created, which is focused on British wildlife. In general, children like learning facts about animals so I thought this would be an engaging topic.

In this wixsite, the main goal is to discover the differences and characteristics of the vertebrate animals: amphibians, mammals, birds, reptiles and fish. As you can see in the snapshot below, there are 3 sections:

  • home page (the cover of the site)
  • British wild animals (info and pictures about the animals)
  • activities material (resources to solve the activities)

Investigating is one of the best ways for learning because the students see it as a puzzle they have to solve. Besides, it gives them a real reason for having to read, comprehend and finally produce.

The most important objective of this wixsite is to help the children improve their English by using it for reasons other than just the language itself.

This is the Activity Dossier that goes with the wixsite. Click on the image to see the 4 pages:

>> Houses in England <<

8 Dec

Learning a language is much more than just being fluent at it. It also means knowing a little bit about the countries where the language is spoken.

In this case, I am focusing on England. Through a wixsite that has been created specially for this purpose the students can discover many facts about the Modern English houses and the Ancient English houses.

An Augmented Reality Halloween

4 Nov

Yesterday, with my 5 year old groups we did the final Halloween related activity after a whole week of celebrations. Using the Quiver App we designed our own Halloween Pumpkins and made them come to life. It was quite cool to see our creations alive even if it was for a few seconds!

Here you can see some examples 🙂

Sense títol1

This is the worksheet you have to print from the Quiver website:

A part from being able to take screenshots while your Pumpkin is alive, it is also possible to record the screen of your device. Here you can see an example of how a Pumpkin comes to life. It is great that you can even see the inside of your Pumpkin!

create MEMORY GAMES for your ESL students

23 Aug

Your students probably love using materials they know you have created for them. One of the most popular games I have created for mine is the worldwide known memory game in its online version. It is a very simple game with very simple rules that everybody loves playing.

When I create my online memory games I use the same images I have previously used for the vocabulary flashcards. The more familiar it is for them the better! I make these games for different ages and they all enjoy it the same way.

The tool I use for creating the games is called matchthememory.com and it works perfectly fine in all type of devices. Sometimes we play them all together in class using the class projector and some other times I share them online so they can play at home using the tablet or phone.

  • Here you have the games I created so far:

sea animals

You can create all sorts of memory games: image-image, image-word and word-word. You can also costumise the cards by choosing different fonts and differents backgrounds.

I hope you and your students enjoy it as much as me and my students do 🙂

Today I would like to share with you another useful list of online resources. This time they are websites that your older students in Primary level can use to practice and reinforce the 4 skills. If you have some computers, tablets or iPads that they could use at their own rhythm, this is your list 😀

Online ESL GAMES for Primary

18 Jan

A couple of months ago I shared with you all a list of online esl games to be used in class for preschoolers. Since I saw it was a very popular post, today I will share a same type of list but aimed at Primary level.

If you have got a smartboard, a projector, a computer or tablets in the classroom where you teach; letting your students play at their own pace will be a delight for them. Playing games where they have to use English is the best natural way for them to practice and improve their language skills. It doesn’t matter if some of the games are not esl games, any type of game where the English language is needed it already becomes a great resource.

Using the “Text Message Language” in the ESL class

7 Sep

Today I was surfing the internet and I saw this image which reminded me of when I have used the Text Message Language to work on the spelling. Lately, it seems that children and teenagers don’t care much about writing properly and they cannot be bothered with learning spelling rules.  Unfortunately for them, there will be a moment in their lives when not being able to write well could become a problem for them or even a barrier to improve in life. Therefore, it is our task to help them understand how important writing correctly is for their professional future.

As usual, we must find not boring ways to help our students learn so they keep their motivation switched on. In this case, one way can be using the Text Message Language.

There are many funny activities that can be done in class:

– You can start presenting to the whole group some of the easiest and most common abbreviations used when texting and they have to match the meaning:

Sense títol

Before moving on to the next activity, you could watch this video that shows some of the abbreviations seen in the first activity plus some other ones:

– Next, you can give out a piece of paper with some sentences written in text message language and in small groups they can try to write them properly:

Sense títol1

– Later, there is another activity where they have to guess the receptor of each message. This time it can be done in pairs:

Sense títol2

There are also some online activities available related to the Text Message Language that can be done:

For further practise there are many worksheets that can be downloaded from this popular website:
